Anna: A Remarkable Working Labrador

 

How It All Began

Anna’s story is a long one, but I’ll keep it short. I first met her in 2012 during a training session with Tess Lawrence and Alan Thornton. At that time, we were looking for a dog for a friend, and Paul introduced us to Anna, who was for sale. Our friends chose another dog, and meanwhile, I was struggling with Druid—a mission impossible that was driving me crazy. Alan suggested to buy Anna, but at that moment, it wasn’t possible.

Things changed soon after, and Anna never left my mind. I contacted Paul to ask if she was still available—and she was. So, in 2013, beautiful Anna joined my pack.

 

A Dog That Changed Everything

Anna was the first truly good dog I could work with. She was at a solid Novice level, had achieved good results in Open Field Trials in the UK, and seemed one of the most promising bitches of her time.
Working with her, I realized there was still work to do, but her foundations were excellent. We started training together and soon enjoyed great results and immense satisfaction.

Many believe it’s easy to take a trained dog and start competing. In reality, it’s not. First, you need to know your dog—understand strengths and weaknesses—and then work on both without neglecting either. It’s a challenge, but that’s where the real fun begins!

 

Her Unique Character

Anna was extraordinary. For her, putting on a lead felt like punishment—she just wanted to stay with me freely, by choice. “Why put me on a lead?” That’s what her eyes said. She was the easiest dog in the world, and everyone who meets her falls in love.

When she first arrived, I even feared someone might steal her—everyone admired her willingness to please, her devotion, and her incredible work ethic.

 

What She Taught Me

Anna taught me so much, and I’ll always be grateful for her love and loyalty. She was honest, eager to learn, and gave her best every single time. This is the essence of a true working Labrador Retriever.

 Come è iniziato tutto

La storia di Anna è lunga, ma cercherò di essere breve. L’ho incontrata per la prima volta nel 2012 durante una sessione di addestramento con Tess Lawrence e Alan Thornton. In quel periodo cercavamo un cane per un amico, e Paul ci presentò Anna, che era in vendita. I nostri amici scelsero un altro cane, mentre io stavo affrontando grandi difficoltà con Druid, una vera missione impossibile. Alan mi suggerì di comprare Anna, ma in quel momento non era possibile.

Poco dopo le cose cambiarono e Anna non uscì mai dai miei pensieri. Contattai Paul per sapere se fosse ancora disponibile… e lo era. Così, nel 2013, la splendida Anna entrò a far parte del mio branco.

 

Un cane che ha cambiato tutto

Anna era stata il primo vero cane con cui ho potuto lavorare bene. Era a un ottimo livello Novice, aveva ottenuto buoni risultati negli Open Field Trial nel Regno Unito e sembrava una delle femmine più promettenti del momento.
Lavorando con lei, capii che c’era ancora da fare, ma le basi erano solide. Iniziammo ad allenarci insieme e presto arrivarono grandi soddisfazioni.

Molti pensano che sia facile prendere un cane già addestrato e iniziare a competere. In realtà non è così: bisogna conoscere il cane, capire punti di forza e debolezze, e lavorare su entrambi. Non è affatto semplice, ma è lì che inizia il vero divertimento!

 

Il suo carattere unico

Anna era straordinaria. Per lei mettere il guinzaglio significava una punizione: voleva stare con me liberamente, per scelta. “Perché mettermi il guinzaglio?” sembrava chiedere. Era il cane più facile del mondo, e chi la conosceva la voleva subito.

Quando era arrivata a casa, temevo che qualcuno potesse rubarla: tutti erano entusiasti della sua voglia di compiacere, di lavorare e di stare con me.

Cosa mi ha insegnato

Anna mi ha insegnato moltissimo e sarò sempre grata per il suo amore e la sua lealtà. Era di un onestà, desiderosa di imparare e dava sempre più del 100%. Questa è l’essenza di un vero Labrador da lavoro.

Wie alles begann

Die Geschichte von Anna ist lang, aber ich fasse mich kurz. Ich traf sie 2012 bei einem Training mit Tess Lawrence und Alan Thornton. Damals suchten wir einen Hund für einen Freund, und Paul stellte uns Anna vor, die zum Verkauf stand. Unsere Freunde entschieden sich für einen anderen Hund, während ich mit Druid kämpfte – eine Mission unmöglich. Alan schlug vor, Anna zu kaufen, aber zu diesem Zeitpunkt war es nicht möglich.

Kurz darauf änderte sich alles, und Anna ging mir nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Ich kontaktierte Paul, ob sie noch verfügbar sei – und sie war es. So kam es, dass die wunderschöne Anna 2013 zu meinem Rudel kam.

Ein Hund, der alles veränderte

Anna war der erste wirklich gute Hund, mit dem ich arbeiten konnte. Sie war auf solidem Novice-Niveau, hatte gute Ergebnisse bei Open Field Trials in Großbritannien und galt als eine der vielversprechendsten Hündinnen ihrer Zeit.
Beim Training merkte ich, dass noch Arbeit nötig war, aber ihre Grundlagen waren hervorragend. Bald erzielten wir tolle Ergebnisse und große Zufriedenheit.

Viele glauben, es sei einfach, einen ausgebildeten Hund zu übernehmen und sofort zu starten. In Wirklichkeit ist es nicht so: Man muss den Hund kennen, Stärken und Schwächen verstehen und an beiden arbeiten. Das ist nicht leicht – aber genau da beginnt der Spaß!

Ihr einzigartiger Charakter

Anna war außergewöhnlich. Für sie bedeutete die Leine eine Strafe: Sie wollte freiwillig bei mir bleiben. „Warum eine Leine?“ schien sie zu fragen. Sie war der einfachste Hund der Welt, und jeder, der sie kannt, wollte sie haben und schwärmt immer noch von ihr.

Als sie ankam, hatte ich Angst, dass sie jemand stehlen könnte – alle waren begeistert von ihrem Willen zu gefallen, zu arbeiten und bei mir zu sein.

Was sie mich gelehrt hat

Anna hat mir so viel beigebracht, und ich werde ihr immer dankbar sein für ihre Liebe und Loyalität. Sie ist ehrlich, lernfreudig und gibt immer mehr als 100 %. Das ist die Essenz eines echten Arbeitshundes.
